In a bid to promote space awareness across the country, the Kenya Space Agency’s Education and Outreach team conducted a two-day outreach program in Siaya County to commemorate World Space Week. The initiative aimed to bring space outreach to the grassroots level, ensuring visibility and affirming that space is for everyone.
On October 7th, led by Jacques Matara, the KSA team visited the Siaya Institute of Technology in Siaya Town. In partnership with AAC Space Africa and The Dala Project, they organized a range of activities, including a presentation on space careers aimed at inspiring students to consider pursuing careers in the space industry. Presentations by Malkia of KSA and Dr. Van Zyl from AAC Space Africa emphasized that all careers can be space careers, with the diversity of professionals in attendance reinforcing this idea.
The day also featured a variety of engaging activities, including a planetarium session that left students in awe of the wonders of the universe. A systems engineering session shed light on the process of satellite development and launch. Other sessions included IT and robotics demonstrations, as well as a telescope viewing experience that allowed students to observe the sun through a solar filter.
On October 8th, the teams visited Aluny Primary School, where they focused on inspiring younger students and sparking their curiosity about space. The joy and enthusiasm the students displayed were clear evidence of the positive impact of space education and outreach. Following the day's activities, the school even considered establishing a Space Club to continue engaging students in space-related topics beyond World Space Week.
This outreach effort was truly a remarkable experience, one that we are confident will contribute to Kenya's future space workforce, potentially producing engineers, scientists, and astrobiologists.
The Kenya Space Agency remains committed to its mission of promoting space exploration in the country, encouraging schools to reach out for similar tailored experiences. Day 4 and 5 of World Space Week in Kenya concluded with the students of Aluny Primary excited and eager to learn more about the paths to various space careers. It was, indeed, an unforgettable experience.
